Root canal treatment process: How does it work?
Root canal treatment involves the removal of infected or dead pulp from inside the tooth, followed by thorough cleaning and disinfection of the root canals. Once cleaned, the canals are filled with biocompatible material to prevent reinfection. Here's how the process works:
Diagnosis and planning: The first step is a thorough diagnosis, which often includes digital x-rays to understand the extent of the infection and the condition of the root canals. Based on this, individualized treatment is planned.
Anesthesia and isolation of the tooth: At the beginning of the procedure, the tooth is anesthetized to ensure the patient's comfort. The tooth is then isolated with a rubber flap, called a cofferdam, which prevents bacteria from entering the tooth canals during treatment.
Pulp removal: The doctor makes a small opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp of the tooth — tissue containing nerves and blood vessels. Removing the infected or dead pulp is key to eliminating the source of infection and pain.
Cleaning and disinfecting the canals: After the pulp is removed, the root canals are thoroughly cleaned. This uses special endodontic tools and disinfectants to remove any residual tissue and bacteria.
Canal filling: After cleaning, the canals are filled with a biocompatible material such as gutta-percha, which provides a permanent seal. This filling prevents re-infection and helps maintain tooth structure.
Restoration of the tooth: The final step is the restoration of the tooth, which may include the placement of a temporary or permanent filling, and in some cases a crown, to restore the tooth's natural shape, appearance, and function.
Follow-up visits: After root canal treatment, follow-up visits are important to make sure the tooth and surrounding tissues are healthy and there are no signs of infection.
